LA JOLLA CHILDRENS POOL SEA LIONS - LA JOLLA CA.The La Jolla Childrens Pool, La Jolla California
Welcome to The La Jolla Childrens Pool at 850 Coast Blvd. La Jolla Ca. 92037 - home of "Seal Beach" and the largest group of seals on the Southern California coastline. Seal Beach San Diego attracts nearly 80,000 monthly visitors to La Jolla and the La Jolla San Diego coastline. When it comes to beautiful places to see and visit in San Diego, La Jolla is very high on the list. With a colorful small 10 square block downtown that rivals places like Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, this quiet coastal community is tucked away right on the ocean in San Diego. La Jolla has about 2 1/2 miles of sidewalks and trails that go along the downtown area. This is the home of the famous "Childrens Pool", where mass numbers of sea lions relax and spend the day. It is a very popular place for tourists to visit and is well known in the area as one of the very few sea lion refuges in San Diego. Come spend an afternoon with us in "The Jewel" of San Diego. (The spanish translation of La Jolla is "the jewel".) The sea lions are protected mammals and people are not allowed to get close to them or feed them as the sign explains. * A Message from The National Humane Society about the treatment of seals in La Jolla Seals in La Jolla, California are in terrible danger because of a misjudgment by the San Diego City Council and the federal government. Recently, the city council removed the protective barriers and signage surrounding "Children's Pool," a unique cove in which the seals in La Jolla have been resting and raising their young for decades. The Children's Pool is possibly the only remaining suitable mainland rookery site in the area, and it provides visitors with the unique opportunity to witness the natural behavior of these often elusive marine mammals. Since the city's decision in September to remove the protections, numerous reports have detailed the frequent harassment of and injury to La Jolla's beloved seals. The seals of the Children's Pool are beloved by tourists and local residents alike. A 1999 survey of local school children found that, by a 9 to 1 margin, they preferred to have seals on the beach rather than people. Their decimation because of the city council's actions would be a tragic loss. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Contact the National Marine Fisheries Service and La Jolla City Councilperson Scott Peters(who is responsible for the district in which the seals are apparently being harmed). Ask them to put back the rope and signs and prevent people from harassing and harming the seals'and to develop a plan to designate this area as a protected seal reserve. Cathy Campbell National Marine Fisheries Service, Southwest Regional Office 562-980-4060 E-mail at Cathy.E.Campbell@noaa.gov Councilman Scott Peters 619-236-6611 E-mail: ScottPeters@sandiego.gov * This is the councilperson for the city who introduced the initiative to "share and dredge the beach" aka get rid of the seals and have people "retake it". Please email these people and let them know how you feel about the beach being re-designated for a handleful of humans, who have over 90 miles of other local beaches to visit, but must also have the only 150 feet of beach the seals use in Southern California. This is one of the dumbest moves I have seen by a politician in the almost 20 years I have lived here. Now the beach has about 5 people laying out to "retake the beach" with the thousands coming by to see the seals mocking them for the baffoons that they are. There are fewer and fewer seals using this area because of the actions of these few individuals who cannot use any of the other beautiful beaches, some within 100 yards of this location. Enough is enough, email these folks above and tell them to put up the rope barrier and get things back to the way they should be and were. A nice little house oasis. Along the coastline there are little green houses which provide shelter from the sun and a nice place to sit down and relax. La Jolla California is definetly one of the most scenic places in Southern California. If you have not been there yet, make sure you take a Sunday morning or afternoon to walk the coastline and enjoy this wonderful place. La Jolla Children's Pool Description: The Children's Pool (850 Coast Boulevard), also known as the Casa, is a small beach partially protected by a seawall. The original intention was to create a fully protected swimming area, but sand has filled in much of the area inside the wall. This is a very picturesque beach with a panoramic view. During much of the year, seals and sea lions are present on or near the beach and a reserve for these marine mammals, called Seal Rock, is just offshore. The Children's Pool, is within a short walk of the commercial area of the community of La Jolla. Grassy park areas can be found a short distance to the north and south. Several small beaches are nearby including Wipeout Beach to the south and Shell Beach to the north. This is a popular beach for scuba divers because of the reefs just offshore. These same reefs can create very strong currents and other hazards, particularly in high surf conditions.
